Charley was born Charles Burton Harper, in Frenchton, West Virginia on August 4, 1922. He graduated from, and taught art at, the Art Academy of Cincinnati where he met wife, Edie, also an artist. The two married in 1947 after graduating.

Charley Harper is the subect of a new book edited by Todd Oldham. The book chronicles his playfully modern work from 1950-1975. The book is a hefty 17.3 x 12.2 inches and 420 pages. Sadly, Charley died last month at the age of 84. For those in Los Angeles, a book signing will take place tonight with Todd Oldham at Hennessey and Ingalls from 7-9 PM.
I had never heard of Charley Harper, but his work looks totally awesome. Amazon has the softcover version for $32 and I had to physically restrain myself from ordering it immediately. I have the feeling that I’ll be ordering it very, very soon, though. Thanks for enlightening me. (love your blog)
