But now to what this post is really all about. I woke up today and from the minute I heard that alarm and got out of bed, I kept reminding myself, “The greatest gift of all is the gift of here and now. You woke up today, you are healthy, you are breathing on your own, you are able to get out of bed and go hike mountains. You are alive. You have been given the greatest gift of all.” I continued to remind myself of this as I got dressed and drove to my mountains. I kept this thought on repeat in my brain as I took a new trail on the mountains, as I took breaks thinking I was too tired to keep going, as I approached new twists and turns and steeper terrain in the trail ahead. I kept this thought with me as I drove home, and I am keeping that thought running through my mind, almost like a mantra, as I sit here and type this right now. The greatest gift of all is the gift of here and now. After all, nothing is guaranteed in life, and the only thing we can be sure about is right now, this day, this moment. Yesterday is the past and what happens tomorrow we cannot predict, but right now, this very moment, this is where I need to be living. I need to always appreciate this very moment and live in this moment instead of using up my moments worrying about the future or the past. I’ve had anxiety for many years and am sad to say that I have definitely wasted many moments not really being present, but rather lost in overwhelming and all-consuming worry and fear of what might lie ahead in the future. Those are moments I will never get back, and it is up to me to make a conscious decision from this day forward to be more mindful and live in the here in now, instead of wasting my days in the past or future.
