It’s the end of the world as we know it. Seriously. But this is no reason to panic, worry, or stock your pantry with jugs of water and pallets of astronaut ice cream.
[Was the audience] Those came up during the final songof the encore, " The End of the World As WeKnow It (And I Feel Fine.)" Anyway, as pointed his microphone at the audience during the frenetic, hodgepodgehistorical/nonsensical laundry list that is "ITEOTWAWKI (AIFF)," andthousands of people simultaneously shouted out the -cum-lyric"Leonard Bernstein!!! I decided that thereis no more subversive a mainstream rock band than R.E.M.
From the second I opened this book (or, um, clicked on my Nook app) I knew it was something special. Yes, it has a great premise (who wouldn't want to see the Brat Pack face off against little green men?) but what really grabbed me was the voice. Witty, clever, and completely endearing. It's hard for many authors to handle multiple POV without making all the characters sound the same, or worse, using shallow, cliche stereotypes in an attempt to make them sound different. Iva-Marie plays off the classic teen archetypes but makes each character funny and smart in distinctive, sometimes surprising ways. "The End of the World As We Know It" hits the sweet spot between YA and Sci-Fi and is a great entry into both genres for people like me who typically read Chick Lit or Rom Coms. In addition to being a fun, weird adventure (I can't smell coffee anymore without thinking of this book!), TEOTWAWKI is also laugh-out-loud funny. I don't mean like when your friend texts you something kind of funny and you reply "LOL." I mean, I actually laughed out loud. At its heart, this is a universal story about people finding their way in the world...something we can all relate to whether or not aliens have actually taken over it.
has created a web site at dealing with TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it). It includes both prophecies from religious figures, academics, etc. and is graphic intensive. It is well worth visiting; a lot of fun.
